Several Die As Two Cult Group Clashes

Still during the festive period, 7 persons have reportedly lost their lives as two strong rival cult groups in Otukpo area of Benue state clash.

 Sources said that the crisis started on Saturday near Saint Francis College, Otukpo, and the cult groups were fighting over power of supremacy.
 An eyewitness said “It all started like a joke, when some young men were initially throwing fireworks at one another but within a short time, they pulled out gun and it became a serious affair.
“For two days, young men residing around Saint Francis College (Ogwonuigba) Oiji Street, Sabon-Gari and Ojira engaged one another in a battle to take over control of the town.”

“They shot at each other in the name of belonging to rival cult groups and people were running up and down all over the town for safety over fear of being hit by stray bullet.”
 The eyewitness added that “It took the intervention of the Police, who drafted men into Otukpo to check further spread of the crisis, but before then, several persons had been killed while others sustained bullet injuries.”



 According to the Benue State Police Public Relations officer, PPRO, Assistant Superintendent, ASP, Moses Yamu, the Police confirmed three deaths.
 He said they were “three deaths, three with gunshot wounds, eight arrested and four locally made pistols recovered.”
