Speaker warns electorate against inducement in Osun gov poll
Dr. Najeem Salaam, the Speaker
of the Osun State House of Assembly, has
warned the warned the people of the state against being induced to vote.
The Speaker
gave this admonition on Tuesday in a statement to felicitate with the people of
the state on the occasion of Democracy Day.
The
lawmaker, who is also a governorship aspirant on the platform of the ruling All
Progressives Congress asked the people of voting age to discharge their civic
responsibility as citizens using their permanent voter cards to vote in quality
leaders.
Salaam said
though he acknowledged June 12 as
Democracy Day in Nigeria; nevertheless, he stated that May 29 was equally
significant as a day Nigeria crossed over from military regime to civil rule.
He stated
that the opportunity offered by this day must be taken by the people to
recognise the office of the citizen as an existential office, using their votes
wisely without inducement from politicians.
He
said, “We have reached a phase in our
political life in which the people who are electing politicians to manage their
affairs must show interest in the way they want to be governed and who are
elected to govern them.
“This is the
best to way to recruit political leaders, this is the way to go, not offering
votes for a tagged price.”
The Speaker
further urged politicians across the divides to eschew violence before, during
and after the election, saying election should be held under a carnival like
atmosphere and not war-like approach.
