St Greg - The Mgbomgbo Ekele Master

MGBOMGBO EKELE (Thanksgiving)

I stumbled on a music video I found quite interesting, beginning with the epic nature of the video which showcases African setting and at the same time tells story of early Christian traditions. The video is also remarkable considering known Nollywood faces on the video but in the midst of all these, the beauty of the song accompanied by one of the best beats one has heard still stands out clearly.

The Hit Song

Watching closely at the end of the song, I read the song title MGBOMGBO EKELE (Thanksgiving) by St. Greg ft. Victor Ike. The first thing I did was to repeat the video as to fully enjoy this heavenly rendered Thanksgiving song to God for many good things I enjoyed this year, at least for the life He gave me even in this Corona virus infested year.

 A Great Collabo

As I researched to know more about the artists, I found out that the featured artist, Victor Ike had before now featured in other beautiful songs in the past which include OKAKA by Frank Edward, then I began to find the whole thing more interesting.

Best Gospel Music Director

Truly, the director of the video, Dova did quite a wonderful work in telling a beautiful story within 4 minutes in a way that is quite interesting and explicit as I later learnt he had done in some other high traffic videos he had directed, ranking him amongst the best gospel music directors. I then wondered who could put up all these beautiful crew together, I then stumbled on the biography of the major artist himself, St. Greg and wow! No wonder!

St Greg Days With The New Waves

St. Greg was the lead singer of the renowned New Waves (dready boys) of the early 90s who had their debut album, YARDSTICK take West African music by storm and sold over 2m copies and inspired the emergence of countless reggae groups across West African nations, Nigeria in particular - Of the truth, if "Dready Boys Hit" was not played in any party then, the party was not over yet!

Studying more about this young man, it was revealed he had since almost a decade returned to music (gospel) after over 2 decades the group left music due to the ill-treatment they suffered at the hands of their former record label owner, Average records.

St. Greg since returning to music had released many beautiful songs which includes the ever green track "Have Your Way" featuring veteran producer cum artist, Iyke Onka; Spirit & Life; Ide; East Wind, a classic he rendered with his former group, The New Waves, amongst others.

But there is something different about this new track, Mgbomgbo Ekele, so rich & purely a different genre from his usual and this was the first question I put to him when I finally got in touch with him, "How did you come about this track, Mgbomgbo Ekele? The uniqueness, the beauty, the total packaging which is very different, to the end that within a short period of time, it is receiving a very strong attention and reception."

Then St. Greg, who also floats a very successful Advertising & Marketing Company, U360 Network Base Mark Ltd released the secret. "It is just all God factor, truly it is God, Who in His infinite wisdom and grace connected me with wonderful people in the Nigeria gospel music industry, most recently is Kelly Lyon, ushering in a new dimension for my gospel music turn around."
